Poseidon probe delivers the goods

US supermajor ConocoPhillips has struck a 10-metre gas-bearing interval with the primary target still ahead at the Poseidon-1 deep-water wildcat in north-west Australia's Browse basin.

Co-venturer Karoon Gas said the well hit 10 metres of gas-bearing sand in the secondary target - the middle Jurassic Plover formation - and further reservoir sands are expected to be penetrated over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Based on mud logging and logging while drilling data, the 10-metre sand is interpreted to contain hydrocarbons, the significance of which will be evaluated by further analysis of all data upon the completion of drilling and logging, said Karoon.

The Poseidon-1 well spudded on 26 January using the semi-submersible Sedco 703, and had pre-drill potential of up to 7 trillion cubic feet of gas.

It is the first of three wells in ConocoPhillips-operated blocks WA-314-P, WAP-315-P and WA-398–P.

ConocoPhillips is interested in finding enough gas or an expansion of its Darwin liquefied natural gas plant in northern Australia.
